Being Against GMOs

Food. As delicious and wonderful as it is, the food you are having right now may not be what you think you are eating. With the increased use of GMOs, sometimes it can be unclear what is actually in our food, or how our food was changed.

I think there should not be genetically modified foods because they can have adverse effects on the environment, other animals, and people as well (Phillips, par. 5-7)

GMOs are a relatively new invention. They have so much potential to do good in the world. Genetically modified foods are any food that has been altered genetically to show a trait that is favored.  But when they aren't tested adequately enough, they can't be considered safe for consumption. Unfortunately, most of the food that we eat with GMO ingredients is not tested properly, allowing them to make it into the market. Laws like the Monsanto Protection Act make it easy for GMO-producing companies to bypass rules (Godoy, par. 9) that every other company would have to follow.

When you think about it, GMOs can make it into the market because they are not properly tested because laws like the Monsanto Protection Act are put into effect. And the Monsanto Protection Act is a law because they don't properly test their genetically modified food. It's like this whole thing is a giant fallacy (the fallacy being begging the question), but instead of an argument containing the fallacy, it is more of an action. The result? The market, in 2014, 75% of processed food has been genetically modified (Center for Food Safety, par. 2).

  1. I like the background information that you give in the piece because a lot of people, including myself, would not know what a GMO is without the explanation. I would just add a little bit more supporting detail to your argument. Overall I think you did a good job.
